I n some ways it’s not surprising that Sloane’s name has slipped from sight. The museum has grown out of all recognition, and the mass of objects he bequeathed is now just a submerged fragment of the whole, re-organised, relegated, and sometimes rejected. (Over the years, the whiffier decaying animal specimens were taken out and burnt.) And although he was a prominent scientist, he did not give his name to any particular theory – unlike his colleague Isaac Newton, or the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, who came to London to study the plants in Sloane’s collection.

The larvae blend in really well with the plant greenery. Just get used to a daily patrol, looking for hornworm eggs and small caterpillars. Here are some cues of infestations:
